Inertization of metal powders

Reduction in hazard classification of metallic powders and hydrogen production

When waste metallic dusts are stored under environmental conditions for medium to long periods, localized overheating phenomena may occur, potentially leading to actual fires. These processes require thorough investigation to understand the conditions that favor the ignition of these materials.

K-INN Tech has analyzed the environmental and surrounding conditions that trigger the ignition of metallic dust accumulations and identified a process for safely inertizing these dusts.

The experimental study conducted has set a dual challenge: understanding the origin of the ignition phenomenon and developing green, sustainable solutions for stabilizing these materials.

Thanks to this new technology, metallic dusts generate hydrogen during stabilization: this research paves the way for an alternative industrially impactful technology, enabling the production of clean energy from metallic waste.

The project resulted in the filing of a patent (No. 102020000032366, dated 07/02/2023), describing a procedure and apparatus for detecting the reactivity of metallic dusts and assigning them a hazard classification (low, medium, high) through a simple, quick, and reproducible test.

Additionally, K-INN Tech provides guidelines for the safe handling and storage of these dusts at companies and facilities.
